Committee Assignments - Something to Consider
East Lansing is unusual because its council members are assigned as liaisons to the city's boards and commissions. This doesn't exist in other cities of East Lansing's size, nor in other cities using the city manager (weak mayor) form of government. It's in the charter and can't be easily changed -- although I hope that at some point we will consider changing it.
It's hard enough for residents who work, have kids, and/or other obligations to serve the community. East Lansing's extra requirements for city council members make it ridiculously hard for most people to serve on city council. I ran knowing what the obligations were, but I was able to rearrange parts of my life. Most people can't do that, and the city loses out when fewer people are able to serve.
